Headwaters of the Assiniboine

history

The name Preeceville came from the Preece family, who homesteaded on what is now the town site.

Settlement in the region around Preeceville dates back to the fur traders who came to the upper Assiniboine region before 1800. Ranchers followed the trails made by the First Nations people and fur traders.

Ranching gave way to farm homesteads after the township was surveyed in 1900. Settlement was further expanded after the Canadian National Railway arrived in Preeceville in 1912.

Preeceville is located in east-central Saskatchewan, approximately 105 km north of Yorkton at the junction of Highways 9, 47, and 49. We are in the northern part of the Parkland region and on the southern edge of the timber zone. The land rolls gently, and is well suited for mixed agriculture.

The population in Preeceville has remained fairly constant since the early 1990s, allowing it to remain a very self-sufficient community. The town serves as the shopping and service centre for a population of nearly 5,500, who live in the surrounding towns and rural municipalities of Endeavour, Sturgis, and the RMs of Preeceville, Hazel Dell, Clayton and Buchanan.

The climate is moderate with annual precipitation of approximately 205 mm. On average, the last spring frost is in late May and the first fall frost is in early September. The hottest months are July and August with an average minimum temperature of 7.5 degrees Celsius and a maximum average temperature of 29 degrees Celsius. The sun shines about 2361 hours per year, with July being the sunniest month. The prevailing winds are north-westerly. The climate in Preeceville is suitable for summer activities such as fishing, swimming, hiking, boating, ball, and other outdoor recreation and sports. Winter activities include snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, ice-fishing, and skating.

The town is governed by a council consisting of a mayor and six councilors, elected for four year terms. An administrator, responsible to the Town Council, carries out the day to day administration with the assistance of an assistant administrator and an office assistant.

The Community Development Officer assists with the expansion of local businesses and tourism activities.  The Recreation Director assists in the development of sports and leisure programs. The Town of Preeceville has an extensive history book of the whole area.
